The songs are listed under categories which are self explanatory.
Each song title has the number of chords listed in brackets after the title. This gives a good idea of how difficult or otherwise a song is to play. Very broadly you can assume:
The native autoscroll in most browsers will work with the songsheets, however because the sheets have been designed for projection and use a large font - the slowest native autoscroll speed is usually too fast.
To deal with this the sheets include buttons (at the top of the page) to trigger an adjustable autoscroll. These buttons have the following features:
It is important to understand the limitations of song sheets.
You have to know a song in order to be able to play it. You must know the melody, and timing, because a typical song sheet does not provide this information.
Song sheets do not normally show rests (either instrumental or vocal), nor is there any easy way of showing chords with durations of less than one beat.
The general principles that have been followed are:
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| [C] | All chords are shown within square brackets. For example the chord of C major is shown as [C]. Nothing else goes inside the square brackets apart from the name of the chord. [C] means play the C chord for the number of beats necessary for the song being played. Usually this will be until the songsheet tells you to change chord. At the risk of sounding repetitive, you must be familiar with a song to be able to play it. |
| [NC] | No chord (there is no suitable chord for this part) |
| [Tacet] | Don’t play anything for this section. Effectively [NC] and [Tacet] give the same result - don't play anything here. |
| [C]* | Play a single down strum of the C chord and stop (damp the strings immediately after the strum) |
| [C]/ | Play a single down strum of the C chord and allow it to ring (allow the string to continue sounding after the strum) |
| [C]// | Play 2 down strums on beats 1 and 2 of the bar and allow to ring |
| [C]/// | Play 3 down strums on beats 1, 2 and 3 of the bar and allow to ring |
| [C]. | Play the C chord for 1 beat only and go to the next chord |
| [C].. | Play the C chord for 2 beats only and go to the next chord |
| [C]/* | The above symbols can be used in combination - so [C]/* means play one down strum on beat one, and a stopped down strum on beat 2. |
| [X] | [X] means make a percussive sound by damping the strings with the left hand, and strumming with the right. Sometimes called the New York Strum [NYS]. |
| Instrumental | Instrumental sections are preceded by the instruction “Instrumental”. Often the lyrics are included in strikeout |
| Time Signature | Most songs are in 4/4. If a song is in a different time signature - usually 3/4 - this is indicated in brackets after Intro like this Intro (3/4). |
| Start Note | Usually the start note can be inferred from the chords in the Intro. In any song where this may be difficult the start note is shown in brackets after Intro like this Intro (C). |
